For some reason I am almost completely unable to follow my food budget. I'll try, and then stuff comes up like "let's just pick up a few things to take over to the fam's house for Sunday brunch since they haven't been shopping and have no food," and "oops! I forgot to get everything I need for this recipe, and this one, and this one,"and "I rarely make it out to Trader Joes, I might as well get enough of their fantastic chips, mac and cheese, and inexpensive wine to last me a while." Before I know it, I'm more than a hundred dollars behind. What the heck?! So, every once in a while I'm forced to go a pay period (two weeks) without buying any/much food and creatively live off whatever we have in the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry.
(Incidentally, when my food budget was $5 a day, I rarely went over. Now that I have a whole whopping $10 a day, I can't seem to make it work. )
If you haven't guessed, I'm over again. Plus my sexy husband is getting laid off at the end of the month through no fault of his own. It's time to get caught up.
So...I just got back from the Pearl Ally Farmer's Market downtown, and I spent the $8 cash that I had in my wallet (money that doesn't come out of my checking account isn't real money) on a large cantaloupe, 2 small sweet peppers, 2 acorn squash, and 4 zucchini squash. This, plus the stuff we already have, is going to have to last us until next Thursday.
I'm not too worried. These weeks can be fun. I'll assess my reserves tonight and keep you posted.

I'm excited to hear about your economizing! I feel like I'm constantly working at ways to find balance between (1) cost, (2) nutrition, (3) convenience with a crazy two-student/city commute/ evening class schedule, and (4) variety/yumminess.
