Leaf lettace salads

What are your favorite toppings for a basic, leaf lettace salad?

Here are some of mine:

Red cabbage
Peas
Tomatoes
Beans
Nuts (walnuts, sunflower seeds, etc.)
Raisins
Homemade Croutons
Homemade pita chips
Interesting cheese (like asiago, blue, feta, or goats cheese)
Mixed fresh herbs
Red or green onions

I really like to put beets on salad -- they feel so rich and nutritious and sweet to me.

Also: have you tried pears? And other fruits, like strawberries. Remember when everyone was making the spinach mandarin salad? That was good, I thought.

Oh, and when we were first married Josh and I loved to mix up a huge salad with crumbled crisp bacon and tart green apple slices, and maybe walnuts?

mmm... I like beets too Cindy, there's something very hearty about them.

I'm a pretty simple waldorf salad kind of girl, apples and walnuts (or pecans if they're on hand, I should try bacon in it sometimes), squash: zucchini or yellow, and I really like radishes.

I like to make my own dressing, my favorite is oil, vinegar, soy sauce, dry mustard, basil, oregano, celery salt and garlic powder. so much better than the bland store bought kinds (not that they're all bad.)

I agree whole heartedly, Mrs. W. Store-bought salad dressings are a waste of money. Making your own tastes a lot better and isn't difficult or time consuming in any way.

Favorite homemade dressing: 3 parts olive oil, 2 parts basalmic, 1 part grated cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and maybe ginger.

Acceptable store-bought dressing: TJs raspberry vinaigrette. Good with spinach, feta, and slivered almonds. This is currently our salad of choice.
